Autistic folks don’t decide to be blunt. It isn’t intentional. We don’t think, “Hey, I’m going to strip off all the nice sugar coating and be rude and inappropriate.” No, we are honest and say what we think, which is our basic intent. We love sharing information. We just don’t think about having to put all the sugar coating on in the first place. That seems unnecessary and confusing. Let’s just stick to the basic facts. It is what it is. No intention to hurt, just a lack of awareness that one will be hurt if we don’t sugar coat. I’m often surprised by the reactions I get and it is only then that I realize I was supposed to be tactful.
Seriously, there have been many times in my life where I pointed out the elephant in the room and it caused a lot of drama but was the catalyst for change, problems being solved. It’s like a group of NTs approach a door and none of them go through because it would be rude to go first, or to eat the last cookie. So they don't. We will.
